Adventure yarns don't come more ripping than King Solomon's Mines, the classic Great White Hunter tale. Novelist H. Rider Haggard's hero, Allan Quatermain (Stewart Granger), reluctantly agrees to lead an Englishwoman (Deborah Kerr) and her brother (Richard Carlson) deep into uncharted territory in Africa, in search of the lady's lost husband. What follows is a cavalcade of boys' adventure stuff: charging rhinos, cannibals, an incredible wildlife stampede, and the back-of-the-neck-tingly thrill of venturing into unmapped lands. The location shooting, including tribal rituals, is marvelous throughout, and the movie manages to pack a great deal of material into 102 minutes without ever seeming rushed. A remake of a 1937 film, King Solomon's Mines was itself remade badly, with Richard Chamberlain, in 1985, and Quatermain was essayed by Sean Connery in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but purists will prefer Stewart Granger's stalwart-yet-sardonic hero--his career never quite got over the role. --Robert Horton

King Solomon's Mines - Debt & Freedom:
I've never seen The African Queen but now I know who this Alan Quartermain dude is supposed to be, and I can see how much better we had it with Indiana Jones. But this review is about a black thing. A small one, though. It happened Sunday on Continental 665 with the crew from Houston. I swiped my one remaining card with credit and got the little 7 inch screen (smaller than an iPad, larger than an iPhone) to connect with Dish Network. King Solomon's Mines Classic:
Of all the versions made of this movie, this is the one that will give you the appreciation of it's classic status. All other versions available pale in comparison. Deborah Kerr and Stewart Granger head up the big names and provide wonderful, clever and cryptic human interractions which the clever viewer will recognise during the course of the action. Sure......it's 50's mindsets, but imagine yourself transformed back to 1950.........just after WW2, and think about the fact that most people had never even... more info

They don't make movies like this anymore. Great actors, and great animal footage of Africa. The movie actually has a plot, and wonderful acting from two of the greats!
