The Progressive Bread Keeper keeps your bread fresh on your counter, freeing up valuable refrigerator space. The expandable design allows you to store loaves of different sizes in the least possible space, and the included slicing guide makes it easy to cut the loaf into even pieces. Carefully placed vents allow air to circulate around the bread, keeping it at optimum freshness. The Bread Keeper is also easy to clean - just put it on the top rack of your dishwasher.
"Bread box" is a term your grandmother knows, though her bread box was most likely tin. This one is plastic, but the principle is the same: To stay fresh, bread needs air--but not too much. Vents in this keeper allow proper circulation. The plastic slicing guide makes uniform slicing easy--starting at about a half-inch in thickness. The guide, however, accommodates a loaf only 5 inches wide, 1-1/4 inches narrower than the keeper accommodates. A wider loaf could be laid on its side for slicing, but the result might be less certain. --Fred Brack

good product:
I was looking for a convenient way to keep bread fresh and this is really great. Rather than use it the "long" way on the counter, I keep it so that I lift the top up and off. I use the slicer constantly and it's a big help, but I do wish it were a little less flimsy. I'm always slicing into the plastic at the bottom of the bread. I wonder how long it will last. But then again, I haven't found anything else like it or better to buy and it wasn't very expensive.
Bealls Department Stores are worthless:
I ordered this item to arrive by the 29th July. Today is the 5th August and the only reason I queried this was because Amazon kindly brought it to my attention. It says in stock, but I have just received an e-mail, from Bealls telling me they do not have the item and my order was cancelled on the 30th.
They never bothered to contact me or anything and the item is still showing as 'in stock'. I would not do business with a company that places NO value on customer service.
Not impressed:
After seeing all the great reviews for this item, I figured this would be the one for me. How wrong I was!!! I find the guide to be pretty flimsy, especially for sturdier breads like rye and whole wheat. After six months of use, there are knife marks scratching the bottom, and it's almost impossible to clean. I'm going to look for a wood bread guide, as that is what I'm used too. The bread keeper is not functional at all.
Excellent:
This is the second of this item I have purchased. The first, which I paid quite a bit more for several years ago, is still in use and fine. However, I often have two types of bread available at the same time. Hence, the second keeper. This cleverly designed keeper and slicing guide do the job for me perfectly. IMHO, anyone who has a problem with them simply isn't using them as designed. Hint: Regardless of the picture, the slicing guide is not meant to be left inside the bread keeper at the same time a... more info
