For my setup, I have my cable service from Cox, my cable modem, and an Linksys wireless router. The day my modem arrived, I took it out of the box and plugged it in. I called Cox, navigated through their automated phone menu system, and read off the MAC ID to the tech services person. He did some stuff on his end to first recognize the new cable modem. I've been renting one of those modems from my cable company for over a year at $3 per month, and realized I could buy my own. Fortunately for me there was a rebate of $20, so it was worth buying one.
