Ben Stiller and the Farrelly brothers bring out the best in each other. In The Heartbreak Kid, Stiller plays Eddie Cantrow, who--persuaded by his father and friends that he's commitment-phobic--marries a gorgeous and seemingly ideal woman named Lila (Malin Akerman, The Brothers Solomon) that he's been dating for several weeks. But after the wedding, things start to go awry... the least of these being that on their honeymoon, Eddie meets a woman who might truly be the girl of his dreams (Michelle Monaghan, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang). As in There's Something About Mary, writers/directors Bobby and Peter Farrelly push Stiller away from his increasingly schticky "tense guy" persona and draw out his sweeter, more multilayered earnest side. On his end, Stiller provides a human core to what could just be a festival of raunch and absurdity (the movie features aroused donkeys, deviated septum jokes, and digitally-enhanced body hair, among other items of questionable taste). It only takes a quick comparison with Jim Carrey in Me, Myself & Irene or Jack Black in Shallow Hal to see what a surprisingly delicate balance that is. The Heartbreak Kid may not be quite as wildly sublime as There's Something About Mary, but it comes extremely close, with kudos to Akerman for her unrestrained nuttiness. --Bret Fetzer

Dirty, Filthy, Vulgar, Crass, Offensive, waste of Celluloid:
What.....my title wasn't enough of a warning.....you want details? You can't handle the details! Friends have we lowered ourselves to the point to say this is entertainment? What are Ben Stiller and Michelle Managhan doing in a cesspool like this? This "movie" is an offense to every adult who cherishes a decent and entertaining romantic comedy. This is so vile I almost got sick from trying to watch it! I had to shut the sound off after ten minutes and finally scanned to get to the end. Pathetic and creepy!... more info
Who would cheat on Malin Akerman??:
I am a bit puzzled as to why the DVD says it is "edited for content". Does anyone know just what this means?? I cannot imagine what could possibly have been left out of the original theatrical release for the DVD release. It was Rated R and warned of "Strong Sexual Content" which I have already seen, I think?? Surely the DVD would contain any and all original scenes, especially with the deleted scenes included?? Does anyone know for sure about this?? Also does anyone know why the widescreen version is 115... more info
Nope:
I'm a big fan of the Farrelly brothers. "There's Something About Mary." Wonderful. "Shallow Hal." Hysterical. But hey, even Cadillacs sometimes leak oil; and in keeping with the metaphor, the Farrellys leaked a couple quarts with THE HEARTBREAK KID. Don't get me wrong, this movie does have several funny moments; I was literally rolling on the floor with one particular scene involving Carlos Mencia as the 'victim' of a vicious hand slap. Yet the film doesn't work for a myriad of reasons, the most... more info
Its Rated R people, not PG or PG13:
I think a lot of people forgot to look at the rating. Its rated R not for some potty mouth but some nudity and some raunch. I was not expecting much, much like I expect from any movie out these days, but was pleasantly surprised. There are a few moments that I was in stiches, and some others that fell flat. Carlos Mencia I thought was so dumb in this he actually cracked me up, I think that was the point "Ah screw off, I am joking". Akerman is good in this, Stiller is pretty funny at times, but it was... more info
