Torn Between Awesome Music and Craptastic Sound:
The music on this album is awesome. This is some of my favorite Metallica music. I like the sound, the mixing, the EQ, all that is good. What is NOT good, is the fact that much of this album is totally distorted to the point where it becomes unpleasant to listen to. I cannot give this album the 5 star rating it deserves because of this. This is not the only album to suffer from this condition. Let me first say that this is the best album Metallica has put out since the "Black" album and I (like everyone else) was very relieved that it was not Re-St. Anger. The songs on Death Magnetic are a return to thrash, and they even let Kirk play solos. Thank god! Metal wise, this is a pretty good album. HOWEVER! The last album by Metallica I can say that I liked was the Black Album. Yes I'm one of the people that doesn't like anything they have done since. In some ways I can appreciate what this album supposedly sets out to do which is recapture that thrash sound they have been missing for almost two decades. The problem is that it fails on so many levels. The obviously bad sound problems are the least of my worries, the songs are overly long and boring.
