We just bought a brand new, expensive mattress and I wanted to get something good to protect it. We have about a 4 inch pillow top and this pad does nothing to take away from the softness of that. I was a little worried about getting a waterproof one, but there's no crinkling -- makes me wonder about the waterproof-ness, which we never tested (hence the "4 star"). It fit our 20 in deep mattress just fine. We didn't attempt washing it.
Good Waterproof Mattress Pad:
This is a good basic waterproof mattress pad. It is not plastic so it doesn't crinkle and make noise when you lay on it. As far as I can tell it does not leak through. The top padding is not thick. If your looking for a fluffy, pillowy top then keep on looking.

Great mattress pad!:
We wanted a waterproof mattress pad for our new memory foam mattress, just to protect it from life's little messes. When I read the reviews of various pads, my main criteria was that the pad be non-crackly, because we really hate the feel and sound of a plastic pad. I didn't care how thin the waterproof pad might be, since we would be using it under our regular mattress pad. This mattress pad is not crackly or crunchy at all, and is actually much thicker than I expected. Highly recommended!
